Targeted and Deliberate

Is the labor market frozen, or are you? Or both?
Lately, I’ve met a slew of people sitting on the edge of a career change but afraid to take the plunge. One has a rock-solid idea for an entrepreneurial venture, and another needs to find a job closer to home but worries there are not enough options. Others are settling for entry-level work when they could do so much more.
You have your own reasons for holding back on your much-needed transition. Perhaps the steady drumbeat of the “frozen labor market” has dampened your enthusiasm. Today I have a message for you. Let’s figure out how to get you unfrozen!
Step One: Stop Mass Applying—Start Precision Targeting
Instead of 50 generic applications, aim for 5 to 10 high-quality ones per week. Tailor your resume to each role, write short, specific cover letters, and focus on roles where you meet 70 to 80% of the requirements (not 100%).
Step Two: Treat Networking as Your Main Channel (not a backup)
A frozen market often means jobs are still filled—but through referrals. Reach out to former coworkers, classmates, or industry peers. Message people at companies you’re targeting (short and respectful). Two or three real conversations each week will outperform dozens of applications.
Step Three: Create Signals That You Are Active and Relevant.
Do small projects that align with your longer-term career goals. Share insights or lessons on LinkedIn. Take targeted certifications or courses if they are respected and recognized by prospective employers.
Finally, please bet on you. Your faith in your capabilities and vision is the single most important factor in the success of your career change. Get a career coach if needed (you guessed it, I’m ready to help). Support, strategy, and resources will all be needed for you to step into your next, best future.
