Take Action

Career crossroads are elusive. You have glimpses of clarity amid frustration, dissatisfaction, and worry. You consider doing something about it, but it feels overwhelming. So, days and weeks go by with no resolution.
A crossroad is like a box. It keeps you stuck, feeling guilty that you want more. Or disillusioned because you no longer enjoy your job. You are anxious, moody, and unfocused. You feel like a failure, alone, while the rest of the world seems to be humming along.
In the middle of the night, unable to sleep, you ponder. You focus on the parts of your career you appreciate. Perhaps you remind yourself that the money is good or your co-workers are friendly. But then you connect with your deeper dissatisfaction. You think about something you would love to do, but the obstacles seem insurmountable.
I am exploring this topic today because I’ve had so many people reach out, stuck in a crossroad, but unaware of the steps they will need to take to move through and beyond it. The Elevate Career Cycle Model offers a smart strategic path forward.
Step One: Introspection
Pull the curtain back and be brutally honest with yourself. Stop beating yourself up for wanting more. Recognize that you have a great deal of anxiety buzzing in your body. Take a long walk, talk to a chicken soup friend, and get calmer.
Step Two: Journey
Thank your previous situation (career, school, or your spot on the couch). Accept that it is time to take action. You are stepping into the unknown with a mixture of fear and hope. The Journey will involve reconfiguring your identity, self-assessment, research, and connecting with people. It’s a big job, and it’s worth it. You are worth it.
I’ve only scratched the surface here, but I hope it’s been helpful. Sharing information about career crossroads over the years has been deeply rewarding.
