It's Just Out Of Sight

As a career coach, I’m in the business of helping folks find a career direction. Here’s the weird thing I’ve discovered: most of my clients know what they want (or have a sense of it) but cannot see it clearly. The answer sits on their shoulder, just out of sight. It’s maddening!
It takes several levels of validation for you (or anyone) to get a clear career vision. It starts with a deep conversation, tapping into what you already know about yourself. You build on that with a career self-assessment, research, networking, and, eventually job search.
But, even with all that work and information, you still might feel lost.
Here are some common scenarios:
- You are afraid. Afraid of making a mistake, failing in the new venture, or worried you won’t find secure employment. All the “what ifs” pile up in your brain, leaving you paralyzed, unable to take a step in a specific direction.
- Your negative past experiences suck the hope out of your soul.
- You lack role models or support.
- You just don’t know where to start.
These real impediments are substantial, but they can be overcome. Here are some tips to consider if you want to move in a direction but feel stuck.
Step One: The only way to it is through it. Waiting until you feel ready will keep you immobilized. You must feel fear and move forward anyway. Action is the key.
Step Two: Trust your gut. You know more than you give yourself credit for. Take a long walk or sit down with a piece of paper and start constructing your future. Be honest about who you are and what you want. Bolster this with a career self-assessment. Self-knowledge is one thing you can focus on and control.
Step Three: Stop comparing yourself to other people or listening to people who cannot or will not be supportive. This is your life. Only you can decide how you want to live and work.
Finally, take small steps and focus on interacting with people. You will not find your future in your living room. Take your curiosity for a ride and see what happens. Join an association and attend an event. In the alchemy of human interactions, the path will become clear.
